Sexual Assault

What is Sexual Assault?

Any sexual contact without permission or consent between two or more people. This includes forced sexual intercourse, forcible anal or oral sex, child molestation, incest, fondling, sexual harassment and attempted rape.

The term sexual assault and rape are often used interchangeably, but rape is only one form. Date rape is used to describe sexual assault between dating partners. Sexual assault by a perpetrator who knows the victim is known as acquaintance rape.

Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault; it does not matter how she or he is dressed, the location or what he or she is doing.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), when we promote awareness of year-round education and prevention efforts and encourage continued support for victims and survivors. Contact us for more information on how you can help or to let us know about your SAAM event. Teal is the theme color for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Free teal ribbons are available at the Crisis Center and Closet To Closet during SAAM.

We are here to help. Please call WCSC’s 24-hour hotline at (340)773-9272, for free and confidential help if you or someone you know is a victim or survivor of sexual assault. You are not alone!
