WCSC’s Anniversary Month!

A movement to help people impacted by violence was born in March, 42 years ago! The Women’s Coalition of St. Croix was started by a community of caring women, from different walks of life. The original group first met at a writer’s symposium at the College of the Virgin Islands on St. Croix. But the conversation about violence against women that happened at the end of the symposium continued around kitchen tables and in the Christiansted Library, thanks to Wallace Williams. The actions that grew out of those conversations was key in starting an organization to help women and child victims of sexual violence in crisis. Training volunteers to meet victims in crisis and offer support without judgment was most important to the founders of the organization. The volunteer advocate program was the first training program begun at the new organization.

Now, 42 years later, WCSC remains a grassroots, community-supported nonprofit organization. Our mission statement, much like the services we offer, has been revised, to ensure that our focus remains on meeting the changing needs of those we serve, in trauma-informed, survivor-focused ways: to support and empower people impacted by violence. We thank you for joining us in the work to end violence and offer services to promote peace, hope and justice in our communities.
