October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), when we shine a spotlight on education and prevention of this serious crime that affects us all. Domestic violence is experienced by people of all ages, ethnicities, economic statuses, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations and religious affiliations. There is no type or typical person who experiences DV. Domestic violence does not discriminate. There are stigmas around domestic violence, and silence allows it to continue affecting lives, families, our communities. Victim blaming and shaming must end.
The Women’s Coalition of St. Croix (WCSC) is joining the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) in this October’s combined campaign around “Every1KnowsSome1.” As a member and local program, we encourage you to join us and other coalitions and organizations across the country in this joint campaign and in promoting GiveforDV. Free purple ribbons will be available at WCSC’s main office/crisis center and at Closet To Closet thrift store.
The theme, #Every1KnowsSome1, will continue this year, to highlight the fact that domestic violence can happen to anyone and is more prevalent than people realize. Look out for social content on your favorite channels throughout October and November, with focus on getting back to basics in raising awareness about what domestic violence is, who it impacts, and why everyone should care.
